The Decision

I gathered my wits about me…
Not daring enough it seemed…
To be viewed as a louche lady…
Whose character teetered on shady.

I wiped my hands on my pinafore…
Now sullied and stained…
Not crisp and pressed…
As it had been before.

Oh, if only I had not left home…
If I had not walked out the door!

But there was no turning back time…
This lot, this moment…
The decision to go there…
It was mine.

I had participated…
With reckless abandon…
They knew me there…
Why, I carried the mantle…
Of “Last Gal standing”…

Had I been gaslighted?
Even if it were so…
Was there any way~to make it right?
Where would I go?

Doggedly,
I determined to
Bring to bare…
All my presence of self…
To dodge the suspicion of others…
To keep them blissfully unaware.

So to the park I raced…
As best I could maneuver…
In my corsets and straight lace.

Popped open my parasol…
Breathed deeply…
Though still trembling…
In my mind regaling it all.

How could any one thing
Control one so?
And why, oh why,
Had I felt compelled to go?

I had been tempted…
Lured in….
Every one of my senses…
Snapped like a stem.

Oh, I saw them looking at me…
These strangers…
They saw me..
But did they know…

They paused…
Graciously to nod…
Greeting me silently…
Before returning to their gazes…
Back to the sod.

But did I see more…
Behind their eyes…
Or was it just me…
And my thoughts…
Were pure lies?…

I walked…
Yes walked…
Around and around…
Lingering in the park…
Till well into dark.

The sky’s deep rich hue…
Seemed, oh so
Lusciously, decadently…
Remarkably brown…
Rather than blue…

Tiny gems of salt
Lay across my skin…
And upon seeing them…

I knew that my walk…
(Which had gone way past ten)…
Had given me a victory~and solace…
That the chocolate did not win!
